Where Square D shines is availability and proven field reliability. Its two residential lines, QO and Homeline, are stocked at virtually every supply house, Home Depot, and Lowe's, which is exactly why we standardize on it. Why We Install Square D Panels
We install current-production Square D, which today means the plug-on-neutral QO and Homeline load centers that Schneider actively makes and ships. By default we lean toward QO, the premium tier, because it uses bolt-on breakers for a more secure connection, tin-plated copper bus bars, a Visi-Trip window that flags exactly which breaker tripped, and slim three-quarter-inch breakers that fit more circuits in the same box. The name QO stands for Quick Open, a nod to its fast trip mechanism, often described as the fastest of any residential breaker.
Homeline is the value line from the same manufacturer. It uses one-inch breakers, runs roughly half the cost of comparable QO, and is fully UL-listed and code-compliant. A properly installed Homeline panel is just as safe as a QO panel, so the upcharge to QO buys features, materials, and circuit density, not baseline safety. One thing worth knowing is that the Square D lineup has shifted toward plug-on-neutral designs, so we install the QO and Homeline configurations available today rather than older legacy all-in-one setups. Square D, Siemens, and Eaton all make UL-listed, code-compliant panels that safely serve a home for decades, so this is not a safety contest. The reason we default to Square D is parts. QO and Homeline breakers are stocked at nearly every store and supply house in South OC, which keeps future repairs and add-ons fast and never special-order. Is Square D safe given the recall I read about
Yes, for new installs this is a non-issue. There was a 2022 CPSC recall tied to certain Square D QO plug-on-neutral load centers built between February 2020 and January 2022, handled through free inspection and repair with no reported injuries. It has been resolved in current production, and we install today's current-production Square D panels, so legacy recall units are not part of what we put in.
Can I put QO breakers in a Homeline panel
No. QO and Homeline use different bus bars, so QO breakers do not fit a Homeline panel and Homeline breakers do not fit a QO panel. The breaker always has to match the panel, which is one more reason it pays to have a panel specialist do the work and label everything correctly.
Do you handle the permit and the SCE meter
Yes. We pull the electrical permit with your local OC building department and coordinate the SCE meter release and reconnect, the step a homeowner legally cannot do alone. Edison schedules the disconnect and reconnect, and we line it up so the new Square D panel is energized cleanly under permit, then we meet the final inspection.
How much does a Square D panel upgrade cost
